Ares attempts to start a war between the Romans and the Amazons in order to regain the power-base as a god that he lost during all that time he was mortal. But Xena intervenes when her daughter, Eve, is captured by the Amazons and put on trial for her crimes against them as Livia. Ares does not try to stop her from foiling his plans and, in the end, he is pleased with her ability to stop him. They come to a mutual understanding of who each one of them is as a person and Ares, in particular, acknowledges that he loves Xena as she is. They come full circle, in that respect.
