The gods' pursuit of Xena and her child is relentless and when Xena and Gabrielle are on run from the gods and they go over a cliff, killing Gabrielle and baby Eve, Xena believes there is nothing left to live for and attempts to impale herself with her sword. Ares is unwilling to let her go and tries to stop her from killing herself with a vial of poison and when his attempts fail and he lets her die, he is wrought with grief and he takes her body and buries it in an ice cavern high in the mountains and goes through a long, heart-opening speech to her lifeless body, telling her that he knows he could never love her the way that she needed but he did love her, nonetheless.
